Cardiovascular Diesease (CVD)

Women Should Be Concerned About Heart Health, Too During Heart Health Month, it is important to recognize that heart health is not just a concern for men. In fact, the American Heart Association reports that in 2003, the number of women who died from cardiovascular disease (CVD) was 483,842 – that’s higher than all forms of cancer combined (267,902)!
What can women do to decrease their risks of cardiovascular disease? Risk factors for CVD include biology (having family members with CVD), age, and cholesterol. While it may not be possible to change biology or age, controlling cholesterol and high blood pressure should be a priority.
Women should include more of the Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) in their diets, either through supplements or food sources. The EFAs, particularly the Omega-3s, have been shown to contribute to cardiovascular health in many ways. Omega-3 fatty acids are natural, mild blood thinners, and seem to work by reducing the "stickiness" of blood cells, which could prevent complications like blood clots and stroke. Omega-3 may also reduce hypertension: studies of large groups of people have found that the more Omega-3 fatty acids people consume, the lower their overall blood pressure levels
EFAs are also catching the attention of many doctors. As more and more research is published on EFAs regarding their effectiveness for controlling blood pressure and cholesterol, doctors are welcoming the idea of recommending these products for some of their patients, particularly for their patients for whom side effects from prescription medications are troublesome.
